The better approach is to design the entertaining space you actually want, then confirm the dimensions work for parking. A standard parking space is 8.5 feet wide by 18 feet deep. A comfortable two-car space needs roughly 18 feet by 20 feet. But the shape of that space — how it relates to the house, the street, the planting beds, and the entry — is entirely up to you.

The three materials worth knowing

Not all pavers perform the same in a dual-use context. Load-bearing capacity, drainage, maintenance, and appearance all vary significantly across the three most common options.

Permeable pavers

The most sustainable option and increasingly the most practical one. Permeable pavers — whether concrete, clay, or composite — are designed with gaps or internal voids that allow rainwater to pass through into a gravel base rather than running off into storm drains. In many municipalities, permeable paving qualifies for stormwater management credits that can offset permit costs.

For a multi-use space, permeable pavers offer one additional advantage: the drainage base that makes them permeable also makes them exceptionally stable under vehicle loads. A properly constructed permeable paver system handles regular car traffic without settling or cracking.

In a front yard entertaining context, natural stone reads unmistakably as patio rather than driveway, which is the aesthetic goal.

The trade-offs are real. Natural stone is the most expensive option ($20–40+ per square foot installed), requires careful selection for frost resistance in cold climates, and some varieties are more susceptible to staining from vehicle fluids. Bluestone and granite are the most durable choices for multi-use applications. Limestone and travertine are better suited to purely pedestrian areas.

Base preparation: the work you’ll never see that determines everything

The most common reason paver projects fail — settling, cracking, shifting, puddles that don’t drain — isn’t the material chosen. It’s the base preparation underneath it.

A properly constructed base for a multi-use paver space involves three layers:

Subgrade preparation — the existing soil is excavated to a depth of 8–12 inches for vehicle-bearing applications (versus 4–6 inches for pedestrian-only). The subgrade is compacted with a plate compactor to achieve a stable, even surface. Any soft spots, organic material, or poorly draining soil is addressed at this stage — not later.

Base aggregate — a layer of crushed stone (typically ¾ inch clean stone or crusher run) is installed and compacted in lifts of 3–4 inches. For vehicle-bearing applications this layer should be a minimum of 6 inches deep. This is what provides the structural support and drainage capacity that the pavers themselves rely on.

Bedding layer — a 1-inch layer of coarse sand or stone dust is screeded level over the compacted aggregate. This is what the pavers sit on and what allows minor adjustments during installation. For permeable systems, this layer uses a coarse angular aggregate rather than sand to maintain drainage.

The total excavation depth for a proper vehicle-bearing paver installation is typically 10–14 inches. Contractors who propose less are cutting corners that will show up as problems within two to three years.

Questions to ask your contractor before signing anything

The difference between a multi-use paver project that performs beautifully for twenty years and one that needs remediation in three is almost always the contractor. Here are the questions that separate the ones who know what they’re doing from the ones who don’t.

What depth of base are you proposing, and why? The answer should be at least 8 inches of compacted aggregate for a vehicle-bearing application. If they say 4 inches, ask why.

How will you handle drainage? They should have a specific answer — either a permeable system, a graded surface draining to a specific point, or a catch basin. “It’ll drain fine” is not an answer.

Will the pavers be edged, and with what? Edge restraints are what prevent the border pavers from migrating outward over time. Plastic edge restraint spiked into the base is standard; concrete curbing is more permanent. No edge restraint means eventual spreading.

What’s your compaction process? Plate compactor on both the subgrade and the aggregate base, in lifts. Hand tamping is not adequate for a vehicle-bearing surface.

Can you provide references for similar dual-use projects? A contractor who has done this before will have photos and contacts. One who hasn’t will hesitate.

What’s included in your warranty, and what voids it? Understand what they’re standing behind and for how long.

Making the space disappear as a parking area

The goal of a well-designed multi-use front space is that when the cars aren’t there, the space doesn’t read as a place for cars. A few design decisions make a significant difference:

Planting borders matter more than the pavers. The visual boundary between the paver surface and the surrounding landscape is what signals “patio” or “driveway” to the eye. Generous planted borders — particularly with layered planting that varies in height — frame the paved area as a destination rather than a through-way.

Furniture placement defines the space. A dining table and chairs positioned at the center of the space, even when not in use, communicate its primary purpose more powerfully than any material choice. Store the furniture nearby rather than in the garage so it comes out easily.

Lighting transforms the evening experience. Permeable pavers: $8,000–$18,000 installed, including base preparation and drainage
Concrete pavers: $6,000–$14,000 installed, including base preparation
Natural stone: $12,000–$28,000 installed, including base preparation

These ranges reflect regional variation, site complexity, and the depth of base preparation required. Projects requiring significant drainage infrastructure, retaining walls, or grading work will sit at the higher end. Simple, flat sites with good existing drainage will sit lower.

The instinct to save money on base preparation is the most expensive mistake you can make. A shallow base on a tight budget becomes a full reinstallation project within five years. Do it once, do it right.
